Bittersweet Times

For the past 2 years this is the week that my last 2 mile run would be tonight. I would be getting my bag packed. My water belt filled with gels and extra bobby pins. The race course would be reviewed one more time. Preparation for my third Pittsburgh half marathon would be well on its way. Unfortunately, this year it definitely is not in the cards.
I still am rehabbing my hip and I have my good days and bad days. I haven’t run in a week for many reasons including an ache in my hip. I went for a massage last night and we focused some time on the hip and it did help.
I didn’t think I would miss the running of the half marathon. When the initial sign-up was advertised I was still in the middle of seeing the doctors and doing the studies. The beginning of training found me doing exercises both at home and at therapy. The cold weather helped me not want to try my luck running.

Today I saw the first wooden horses like these which block off the roads.

The memories of the 13.1 miles came flooding back in my mind. The feeling of exhilaration as you cross the start line, listening to the live bands they have along the course. Seeing so many people, reading the homemade signs and running through the community parties amazed at the work that was put into the parties. Meeting that runner you didn’t know at the start but becoming a running partner from mile 8 to the finish line. Today was the first day I admitted that I missed running. I need to run.
Sunday, the day of the Pittsburgh Marathon, I will be in that crowd cheering the runners and taking pictures of the many sites of the race. Tuesday I will once again begin to run.

Next year on the first Sunday in May I hope this is what I will be doing.

  1. I feel your disappointment in not being able to run the race this year. Good for you that you will be in the crowd cheering on the other runners. I have no doubt with your love for the sport, determination, and drive…, you will not only run the race next year, but will WIN the race!!! Feel my hugs and support… XoXo

I do plan to do it next year. It is fun to see the different neighborhoods and parties. No one quite does it like Pittsburgh. Thanks for your support and comments

I’m not a runner, but I have plenty of friends who are, so I can kind of understand how you feel. I have had hip problems in the past, so I can definitely relate to that. I hope your hip continues to heal, and that you are once again on the receiving end of those cheers next year. 🙂

  3. I am sorry you have to miss out on a cherished activity like this, but next year you will be stronger and faster!!!

  4. Heal, Journeyer… Many fond memories, more good times to look forward to!

So sorry to hear you are missing the race this year but just concentrate on yourself for now and getting better. There will always be next year and you will probably come back stronger and better!
